Shogun seasons 2 and 3 are in the works.

Preparations for the next two seasons for the American historical drama program  - which stars Hiroyuki Sanada -  are currently underway according to The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday.

Though it is rather unconventional for a program to be re-upped for two seasons, it should come as no surprise as it has been a darling with the critics and is considered by many to be one of the best shows in 2024.

The series - which airs on FX and streams on Hulu in the US with worldwide distribution on Disney +  currently has  a 99percent Tomatoscore on ratings aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes.

Perhaps even more impressively, the viewers also love it as it has earned a 90percent  audience score on the same site.

It was also a rating success as it ranks as FX's most watched show ever based on global hours streamed.

The synopsis of the previously limited series is: 'The collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonorable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance.'

The series also stars Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido.

Claville's Shogun is historical fiction as the character of Blackthorne (Jarvis) is loosely based on English navigator WIlliam Adams who rose to become a samurai under Tokugawa Ieyaso.

Ieyaso was a powerful daimyō who later became the founder and first shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate and is the basis for the character of Yoshii Toranaga (Sanada).

THR reports that the Disney-owned network said that it is teasing with the state of author James Claville who wrote the novel which inspired the series in 1975.

The publication reports that a writers room is currently being put together and will commence sometime this summer.

No doubt it will prove to be quite the task as it will continue beyond Claville's original novel.

One good sign is that the creative team behind the first season is set to return including co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Condo.

James Clavell's daughter Michaela Clavell will be serving as an executive producer as well as the aforementioned Sanada is also involved with the development according to THR.

The first season's 10 episode run concluded on Hulu in April.
